Mendocino County receives a 'C' on tobacco control

The unincorporated areas of Mendocino County have received a 'C' on overall tobacco control, according to the American Lung Association's annual report released Wednesday. Last year, the grades for the county were exactly the same, but because of changes to the grading methodology for 2015, the ALA said this year's data shouldn't be compared to earlier reports. Also in the report are nearby San Rafael and Marin County, both of which received A's and were the highest rated in the state for overall tobacco control, the ALA said.

Can Mendocino County compete if marijuana goes legal?

The American Civil Liberties Union Marijuana Legalization Task Force, led by Lt. "With legalization comes corporations," said Carrera, and others agreed, wondering how "boutique growers" could compete if marijuana were sold in stores like Costco. However, Calvino said Mendocino County's warm days and cool nights still provided an ideal growing climate that was hard to match elsewhere. "You can put a seed in the ground in March, and get world-class marijuana in October," he said.

Monarchs on the move: Warm Monterey County weather spurred butterfly activity

"Because of how warm it's been, they've spread out all over the sanctuary," said Ann Wasser, the education manager at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. "When it's warmer there are more areas in the trees that fill that niche," Wasser said. During a count of the monarchs Monday morning, Wasser found clusters as low as 6 feet and as high as nearly 50 feet. Researchers have found the blue-tagged Pacific Grove monarchs in Santa Cruz, a private residence in Big Sur and a wintering spot in Andrew Molera State Park.

Of Cats & Food
We have one cat now, a twelve-year-old shorthaired gray named Django. We almost lost him eighteen months ago to complications arising from his extreme obesity—he weighed over twenty pounds—and in order to save him we became draconian masters feeding him half as much as we used to and splitting that lesser amount into four meals a day to encourage stomach shrinkage. The results have been good. Django has lost nine pounds, is noticeably more energetic and agile, and our veterinarian recently declared him fit as a fiddle.

Accelerating global problems cannot be solved in a society obsessed with production and consumption, affluent living standards, market forces, […]
