Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency to retain control of Ukiah Animal Shelter
On Feb. 17, the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors squashed several months of speculation that the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office could regain control of animal care services, by unanimously voting in favor of the Health and Human Services Agency retaining management of the Ukiah shelter.

Ukiah Council mulling tax for street repairs

"Which is not huge, but at least we're not going in the wrong direction," he said. "At the time, Ukiah opted out, because the polling showed people were less concerned about the condition of their streets than they were about public safety," he said. In the meantime, he said MCOG is hiring a consultant to study voters' opinions on such a measure, and will be covering the $60,000 cost of the study. "Once the study is completed, the discussion will come to the council to decide what it wants to do next," Eriksen said.

Legally Blonde at Mendocino College delivers frothy fun

Well, Elle Woods is back, this time in a fast-paced musical that will leave you feeling as giddy and pumped as if you just downed a six-pack of Elle's beloved Red Bull. Her singing is pitch perfect, her dancing confident. Last, but certainly not least, Spudgey and Besita Dooley, the two pint-sized dogs playing Bruiser and Rufus, have massive stage presence. "Legally Blonde" runs through Sunday, April 19. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. and the Thursday show on April 16 is at 7:30 p.m. and is only $10.

Magiera, 24, of Vacaville, was arrested at 12:01 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of driving under the influence, and booked at the county jail under $27,500 bail. People reported as having been arrested may contact the Daily Journal once their case has been concluded so the results can be reported. The Daily Journal makes no exceptions. Errors may be reported to the editor, 468-3500.

Mendocino Theatre Company auditions for a Reda are April 20-21

Auditions for the Rothko drama, "Red" will be held Monday, April 20, and Tuesday, April 21, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Don Murray room of the Community Center of Mendocino, 998 School St., Mendocino. The artist Mark Rothko works methodically in his New York studio on an unparalleled commission for a new restaurant called The Four Seasons. Auditions will consist of prepared monologues . At auditions, actors may also be asked to read from the script, and are welcome to perform other pieces not from "Red" they may have prepared as well.

UPDATE, 4:40 p.m.: Naked Whale Research director Jodi Smith called from the scene with a bit more detail. The whale is about 25 feet long, she said, and the team was working on getting it to higher ground in hopes of performing a necropsy this afternoon.
