The petitions were presented to City Council during its Jan. 26 meeting and more than 20 residents took to the podium to let council members know they were against the project. The historic building is being purchased with community development block grants after a decision was made by City Council to allocate funds during its regularly scheduled Jan. 12 meeting. Some residents expressed concern after the decision that there wasn't enough notice regarding the meeting to inform the community about the public hearing on the Jan. 12 agenda.

However, Calvino said Mendocino County's warm days and cool nights still provided an ideal growing climate that was hard to match elsewhere. "You can put a seed in the ground in March, and get world-class marijuana in October," he said.
