Electric Cars

Electric cars are an obvious improvement over the current internal combustion engine. Not only are gas powered cars wasting the remaining oil the world has, but they are major contributors to CO2 emmissions, which contribute to global warming.

The main problem with electric cars are their limited range before needing refueling. Improvements in the technology of batteries would be helpful, plus the infrastructure of gas stations could be changed to allow instant replacement of racks of batteries.

There is also resistance from car and oil companies to changes in the status quo, although this has been changing somewhat. The recent popularity of hybrid cars from Japanese auto makers is a step in the right direction.

One futuristic innovation would be for all cars to be made to a particular specification so that in urban areas they could be coupled and uncoupled to tracks, as if each car is just a part of a subway system. While hooked to the tracks and being propelled by an alternate fuel source, they could also be recharged, helping to solve the problem of electric cars having a limited driving range.
