The trend towards open source computer software is definitely to the advantage of society. The open source model allows a much larger body of people to collaborate on the development of the software, which inevitably creates a superior product. The software is then also available to the general public and not controlled by one individual or company. The unwieldiness of Microsoft's operating system is a good example of the disadvantages of propriety software. Examples of the positive ramifications of the open source model are the Linux operating system, WordPress blog software, phpbb forum software, and the PHP scripting language.
